Born in Hong Kong, Chan Ping Chiu graduated from the School of Journalism and Communication, Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
//Acting career
(i)In 1988 Chan co-founded the renowned experimental theatre group “Sand & Bricks”, a collective of young artists from theatre, video and visual arts in the early 90’s.
(ii)In mid-90’s, Chan left “Sand & Bricks” and started to develop educational programs in creative drama and youth theatre.
(iii)From 1998 onwards Chan led On & On Theatre Workshop and curated a variety of projects such as “i-D Generation”, “Little Theatre Movement” and “The Hong Kong Theatre & Education Conference”.
(v)In 2001, Chan received a Lee Hysan Foundation Fellowship from Asian Cultural Council to join a 10-month cultural exchange residency in New York, staying at the Ontological-hysteric Theatre under the mentorship of Richard Foreman. A year later Chan established Cattle Depot Theatre at Cattle Depot Artist Village – the first performance space operated by local performing company.
(vi)Since 2010 Chan has curated the New Writing series and established the New Writing Lab. Apart from innovative / cutting-edge creative works, Chan has directed for local theatres such as Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, Chung Ying Theatre and Hong Kong Arts Festival. Important works include: Best Wishes, Tête-bêche, Waking Dreams in 1984, The House, Metamorphosis, Fly Fly Fly Archaeology Bird, Vision Invisible: the happy journey, Oleanna, Fisher King N’ Handless Maiden, No Significant Abnormality Detected, Tian Gong Kai Wu, hamlet b, 17 Scenarios Likely & Unlikely to Happen in 2012, The Missing Case of a Doomsday Traveller, The Golden Dragon, etc.
